[fancypost bgcolor=; border: 0px; width: 399px; height: 170px; overflow: auto; color: white; font-family: arial; font-size: 8pt;]Many a burden hung over the teenager's head as she made her way through the seemingly abandoned town, whose streets were lined with the remains of vehicles, buildings and once living creatures, animals and humans alike. Hunger pangs served as a reminder of the painful fact that it had been almost two days since her last meal of protein bars and pop tarts. Not conventional, but hey, in this world, you had to live with what you were provided with, huh? Hunger should have been the most troubling problem to the fourteen-year-old, or perhaps the fatigue that made each step more painful than the other. A chronic insomniac, even she had to admit that she would need sleep soon, or rick collapsing here in the open, where she would provide an easy meal for anything that came by.
No, the thing that really bothered Rae was the lack of human company. She was an aggressive girl, who had a frustrating knack for disagreeing with just about anything said by anybody. She had always considered herself to be a fairly independent girl, who was reliant on nobody and could handle anything life threw at her by herself. However, it hadn't been as easy as she had thought it would to be alone for such a long time: three months, two weeks and four days, to be exact. It was an excruciatingly lonely existence.
The last group Rae had played a role in had been a small one. Three women, four men. They were all brave. All loyal. All simply unlucky. It was only by chance that Rae was now walking down this desolate road, alive and well, recalling the sad story. Though she had become immune to the sight of organs, it disturbed her to see the inside of the people she had once called friends. After all, one can put on as brave a face as they want; it doesn't stop them from being a kid, and it certainly doesn't stop them being nothing more than a simple human.
The sudden sound of a foot against concrete pulled Rae from her thoughts so quickly she could have felt nauseated. It was certainly quiet, not least because of the layer of dirt and blood that covered the pavements, but due to the fact that the perpetrator was clearly stepping lightly in an attempt not to catch her immediate attention. Not that it worked. The teenager spun around, hand moving to her bent to retrieve the weapon that resided there. Pulling the gun up to train the sights on her challenger, she arranged her features into a deep, and hopefully intimidating frown. "Stop."
The single authoritative word sounded almost silly, coming from a child of only five feet in height. Her voice was hoarse from under-use. After all, she hadn't exactly had anybody to talk to for the past couple of months.[/fancypost]
